123LEAD Program Description

The career expectations for elementary and middle level school principals have become increasingly more complex with each new education reform. The job can be exhausting to even the most experienced school leaders.  It is quite common for beginning principals to become overwhelmed with the multitude of skills required to successfully meet the responsibilities of the work. MAESP understands the challenges facing principals and has developed a one year program to assist new principals as they navigate the leadership landscape. 123LEAD is designed to support new principals by establishing a professional network to promote reflection, communication, and build critical interpersonal and problem solving skills necessary for leadership success. This one year structured program of mentoring and guidance is MAESP’s commitment to developing excellent instructional leaders for Missouri schools by providing the support, training, advocacy, and a professional network of colleagues necessary to successfully meet the challenges of the principalship.

123LEAD Cohort

A cohort of not more than 20 principals in their first, second or third year as building principals will meet four times during the year to focus on effective building level leadership. Each 1 ½ day retreat held in September, November, and June will meet at the MAESP/MASA Education Center in Jefferson City. One additional meeting will be held in conjunction with the MAESP Leadership Conference at Tan-Tar-A Resort in March. Participants will have many opportunities to learn from experts and experienced leaders, discuss current issues, problem-solve for success, and stay on top of the myriad responsibilities required of effective building principals. Exploring day-to-day issues and understanding the process of change with others will help new administrators sustain their practice by demonstrating effective communication, cultivating positive relationships, strategic collaboration, and professional reflection.
