The Power of One:Of the Richest Men in Town!
Join us for our Sunday evening keynote provided by VJ Smith! Author VJ Smith dreamed of writing a book about a great person who would change the course of history. Would he find this person among the historical biographies of our presidential leaders and statesmen? No, Smith ended up finding the man that would answer his questions in a Wal-Mart store in South Dakota. This man worked hard and was good to people…can it be so simple? Hear the heartwarming story about an amazing man that touched so many lives in a special way. Reflect on what life is truly all about!

The Power of One: Leadership Vision!
Join Muriel Summers, the principal of A.B. Combs Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina, for our Monday morning keynote! She has turned a once-failing school into one of the most popular schools in the state. She did it using a leadership formula that local school districts are implementing. It’s a formula that focuses less on grades and test scores, and more on encouraging children to become good citizens and leaders. Summers was hired as principal of A.B. Combs about 12 years ago, when it was one of the lowest-performing schools in the state. She was tasked with turning the school around or she would lose her job. After her first year, test scores improved. She tried an array of different techniques, bought expensive equipment and subscribed to pricey pro-grams, but the school’s atmosphere was still depressing. That’s when she read “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” a guide that helps readers develop skills that employers look for. She decided to implement those lessons into her school’s cur-riculum, making it the first leadership elementary school in the nation. The staff at A.B Combs began to teach the students to be proactive, to be responsible, to think about the outcome, to work as a team and to communicate. They also listened to students, allowed them to make decisions and take leadership roles and encouraged them instead of reprimanding their faults. When teachers refocused and placed importance on individual children, scores on federally mandated tests automatically improved and students were happier!
