MAESP Spring Conference Scheduled for March 12-14, 2011 "Empowered Leaders Empower Children"

The 2011 MAESP Spring Conference will be held March 12-14, 2011 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, MO.

The Sunday evening General Session speaker will be Dr. Marcia L. Tate.  

Dr. Tate is the former Executive Director of Professional Development for the DeKalb County School System, Decatur, Georgia. During her 30-year career with the district, she has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, language arts coordinator, and staff development director. She received the 2001 Distinguished Staff Developer Award for the State of Georgia and her department was chosen to receive the Exemplary Program Award for the state.

Marcia is currently an educational consultant and has taught over 250,000  administrators, teachers, parents, and business and community leaders throughout the world. She is the author of the following five best-sellers: (1) Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Instructional Strategies that Engage the Brain; (2) Sit & Get Won’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Professional Learning Strategies that Engage the Adult Brain; (3) Reading and Language Arts Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Literacy Strategies that Engage the Brain; (4) Shouting Won’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Techniques for Managing a Brain-compatible Classroom; and her latest, Mathematics Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites – 20 Numeracy Strategies That Engage the Brain. Participants in her workshops refer to them as the best ones they have ever experienced since Marcia uses the 20 strategies outlined in her books to actively engage her audiences.

Marcia received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and elementary education from Spelman College in Atlanta Georgia. She earned her Master’s degree in remedial reading from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, her specialist degree in educational leadership from Georgia State University Spelman College awarded her the Apple Award for excellence in the field of education.

Marcia is married to Tyrone Tate and is the proud mother of three children: Jennifer, Jessica, and Christopher, and two granddaughters, Christian and Aidan Brooke.

 
The Monday morning keynote speaker will be Dr. Monte Selby, The World's Foremost Musical Commentator on American Education.

Dr. Monte Selby – an energetic advocate for educators and children – is known to audiences internationally for his unique keynote and workshop presentations. Stimulating thinking through humor, movement, interaction and original music, his creative approach is enthusiastically received by educators, parents and students.  Monte is an experienced teacher and principal, former leadership columnist for National Middle School Association’s magazine Middle Ground –and currently associate professor of school leadership in the Teachers College at Emporia State University. Audiences describe Monte as “practical … inspiring … talented … thought provoking … a combo of Bill Cosby, Garth Brooks, and Shel Silverstein  …  passionate  …  and very, very funny!”

Monte is widely recognized for his talent as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist.  Several critically acclaimed album releases (MDM Records, Nashville) include One, To Catch Them When They Fall, Peer Pressure, and My Dad Is A Superintendent.  His collaboration with Michelle Selby produced the popular children’s book and CD titled Sounds Like The Truth.  Monte’s latest CD, In The Teachers Lounge (2006), features a long list of notable musicians and #1 hit songwriters.  Because You Teach (2006), from Incentive Publications features Monte’s music in a dynamic new staff development book.  Monte’s music also appears on network television, radio, pod casts, websites, original stage productions, programs, videos, books, and at national and international conferences.

Monte Selby has served on the State Board of Directors for KASSP and KAMLE, as well as local CASA, Arts Council, and Interagency Boards.  He worked as a staff member for the Governor’s Center for Teen Leadership and the Council for Public School Improvement. He volunteers as an NCA Visiting Chair and in his own children’s classrooms.

Monte lives in Council Grove, Kansas with his wife Michelle, sons Michael & Martin, and daughters Madison & Morgan.
